The Health Benefits of Tequila???
By Ross E. Williams
Jalisco Cantina, Las Vegas

Full disclosure: I am a moderate, but frequent consumer of alcohol, mainly tequila.  As the owner of Jalisco Cantina in Las Vegas, Nevada; it is imperative that I keep up with the latest developments within the tequila industry.  And if you believe that’s my only motivation, I’ve got some nice swamp land in the Everglades I want to sell you!  Actually, I really like tequila.

I named my restaurants for the state of Mexico that produces 95% of the world’s tequila.  We carry about 100 different varieties (all made from 100% agave, by the way), and we serve it properly (neat, in a snifter).  I am a self-described tequila evangelist. Being a tequila evangelist can be a tough row to hoe in North America.  It seems that everyone has had a “tequila experience.”

You know, where too many shots of cheap mixto (half sugar cane/half agave “tequila” also known as gold) were pounded with the resulting massive headache the next morning.  All North Americans have had this experience.  So when I have tried to extoll the virtues of sipping a nice extra-anejo, nine times out of ten the response was, “Tequila and I don’t get along.” Dude!  You weren’t even drinking real tequila!  Sheesh!

Consequently, I began to tell a small tongue-in-cheek white lie.  “Well, you know, tequila will keep you healthy.  Yes…..germs cannot live in an alcoholic environment.  So if you drink tequila, you won’t get sick.  And if you are sick, drink it and you will get better.”  What’s a harmless little white lie, eh?  After some time, I noticed something.  I hadn’t been sick in a very long time, like a couple of years.  Could it be?  I started to keep better track.  If I started to feel a cold coming on, I would drink a few shots and I would recover before the bug could take hold.  Eventually, I began to firmly believe my own BS.

Then one day about three months ago, the tequila gods dropped a nice little nugget in my lap: “Study: Alcohol Can Boost Your Immune System” from CBS News Atlanta.  Here’s the link: http://atlanta.cbslocal.com/2013/12/24/study-alcohol-can-boost-your-immune-system/ Then a few weeks later, this:  “Sugars found in tequila may protect against obesity, diabetes” on Fox News: http://www.foxnews.com/health/2014/03/17/sugars-found-in-tequila-may-protect-against-obesity-diabetes/ And finally, this: “Your Dreams Have Come True: Tequila Is Actually Proven To Help Weight Loss” http://elitedaily.com/news/world/praise-lord-tequila-can-actually-aide-weight-loss/

Whoa!!  It reminds me of the Woody Allen movie, Sleeper, where Woody Allen’s character wakes up after X years in suspended animation to find, among other things, that all the foods that were previously thought to be bad for you were good for you and vice versa.  At any rate, the scientific community seems to be on to something with respect to tequila.  I won’t speculate on how they came to study it in the first place, but I’m glad they did!  Finally I can say, “If you know what’s good for you, you will drink tequila.”

Jalisco Cantina and Ross Williams in no way advocate the abuse of alcohol or the consumption by persons who are prone to alcoholism.
